A Four-Minute Dutch Heavy Rock Single That Opened the Road to an Eight-Song Album

August Life released the Blackened Ground single on 27 January 2025. The Dutch band dedicated the 4:12 track to the firefighters who risk their lives fighting fire. Classic rock, hard rock and heavy metal all meet in those four minutes, which suit fans of melodic metal with a clear purpose. Seven months later, it became the second song on the album Passage of Time.

August Life’s firefighters’ single sits in the playlist below, and the full run of coverage is collected on August Life’s artist profile. Blackened Ground came to this desk through PopHits.Co Music Charts, which verifies independent artists and places their releases across its network of music news desks. Hit play, then read on for the story behind it.

The story starts long before 2025. Guitarist Gert Nijboer first stepped on stage in the early 1980s. He founded the melodic hard rock band Versailles in 1987 and joined Mischief in 1994. Mischief then recorded its 1998 album Visions completely live in the studio. From 2003 he spent 17 years in Highway Chile, including the 2008 album Keeper of the Earth.

In 2017 Nijboer formed August Life with Bryan Ketelaars, and the debut album New Eternity followed on 31 August 2018. It runs to ten tracks and opens with the five-minute Intro & New Eternity. A vinyl edition on No Dust Records came out in 2019. Meanwhile, the band played its first full electric show at Sound Dog in Breda. Shows with Tygers of Pan Tang and Praying Mantis came next.

Then the pandemic stopped the live momentum. The band used the lockdown to write. On 3 March 2021 they released The Broken Hourglass, a 5:24 song that led a six-track CD EP. Nearly four years separate that song from Blackened Ground.

The Blackened Ground Single Honours Firefighters With a Video Cut From Los Angeles Fire Footage

The dedication is the first thing the band says about the song. Its video went up on 26 January 2025, a day before the single. It is cut from footage of the Palisades fire in Los Angeles.

The credits read like a map of the band’s network. First, Jack Nobelen recorded the drums at Jack’s Palace in Meerle, Belgium, while the guitars went down at Sydeline Studio. Then the keyboards came from Bazementstudio in Hunstetten, Germany, where Markus Teske mixed and produced the track in January 2025.

The playing comes from inside the band. Nijboer handles the guitars, Harry den Hartog the bass and Richard van Leeuwen the drums, with Teske on keyboards. Spotify also credits the composition to Nijboer and Ketelaars together.

Classic rock has written about fire before. Deep Purple wrote Smoke on the Water about the night the Montreux Casino burned in 1971. The song came out on Machine Head in 1972. Nijboer knows that catalogue from the stage, because he has played Deep Purple songs in tribute productions. However, Blackened Ground takes the other side of the same scene: the crews who walk towards it.

Dutch site Metalfan.nl covered the single on release day. Its headline read August Life eert de brandweer: August Life honours the fire brigade.

Passage of Time Followed the Blackened Ground Single in August 2025 With a 12-Minute Opener

The album arrived on 29 August 2025 on No Dust Records, on CD and on blue vinyl. Teske produced it, and his past work includes Vanden Plas and Symphony X. The CD runs to eight songs, while the LP holds seven.

Its shape explains the single. The album opens with Guidelines, which runs 12:28, and Blackened Ground follows at 4:13. After that, the title track lasts 8:10 and The Water nine minutes. Finally, Air to Breathe closes the CD in just over two minutes. In total, the album runs to almost 53 minutes.

August Life name Dream Theater among the bands that shaped them, next to Dio, Rainbow and Savatage. The long opener fits that line. Dream Theater began Six Degrees of Inner Turbulence in 2002 with The Glass Prison, a song in three parts. Likewise, Guidelines makes the same kind of opening statement here.

From the MusicDrops.News Curator Team: “We value how much Blackened Ground does in 4:12. Its album opener runs almost three times as long. This is the song built to travel on its own, which is exactly what a single is for.”

Nijboer also plays guitar in Vengeance, the Dutch hard rock band he joined in 2023. That band has dates booked into 2027. Meanwhile, the August Life line-up for 2025 lists René Kroon on keys. Watch the video first, then hear the single where it sits on the album, straight after Guidelines.
