A Mexican Pop Artist Moves From a Nineties Classic to Songs of His Own

Nunca Más by Elizo came out on 18 April 2025, the first song he wrote himself. It arrived six months after his version of the nineties hit Azúcar Amargo, a cover that went on to reach hundreds of thousands of plays. Elizo is a pop artist from Monterrey, Mexico, and he produced the new song too. That move, from someone else’s breakup song to one of his own, is the clearest way into a story that now leads to a debut album.

Elizo’s Nunca Más is in our playlist below, and his full coverage history is collected on his artist profile. The song came to MusicDrops.News through PopHits.Co Music Charts, which verifies independent artists and places their releases across its network of music news desks. Press play, then keep reading for the road from a cover to an album.

Before Nunca Más, Elizo Recorded Songs in a Bedroom and Covered a Nineties Hit by Fey

The story starts at home. Elizo grew up in a family of musicians and learned several instruments from an early age. His uncle, Sergio Villarreal, founded the Mexican band Grupo Ladrón and wrote every song on its 2018 album Se Roba a Grandes Artistas. On his website, Elizo describes him as his biggest inspiration since childhood and a key mentor.

Still, music stayed private for years. Then the pandemic arrived, and Elizo started recording songs in his bedroom. Friends and acquaintances responded better than he expected, so he decided to commit to music and knock on doors in the industry.

His first release, in October 2024, was a cover. Azúcar Amargo is a song by Fey, from her second album, Tierna la Noche, which came out in 1996. Mario Ablanedo wrote it, José Ramón Flórez produced it, and it tells the story of a breakup.

Elizo’s version took off on social media. It reached hundreds of thousands of plays, and it brought national press coverage in Reforma and radio play on D99. Today about 21,100 people follow him on TikTok, where his videos have collected 1.3 million likes.

A cover can open doors, but it says little about the person behind it. The next release was his own.

Nunca Más Was the First Song Elizo Wrote, a Pop Track About Walking Away From Love

Nunca Más came next. In his own pitch for the song, Elizo calls it one of his most honest. It deals with a very human contradiction: knowing you have to leave a relationship that hurts you, even while the feelings and the desire are still there.

The obvious way to tell that story would be a slow heartbreak ballad. Elizo avoided it on purpose. Instead, Nunca Más is energetic, sensual and confident pop, made to dance to, and it runs three minutes and 31 seconds. The contrast is the point: a painful decision set to music that feels like taking back control.

Elizo, credited as Juan Alberto Elizondo Escamilla, wrote Nunca Más and produced it with Manuel Herrera Maldonado, Sergio Villarreal and Israel Zacarías. Herrera Maldonado won a Grammy in 2002 for Acuérdate, an album by the Tejano star Emilio Navaira.

The release also changed how Elizo presents himself. His own biography calls Nunca Más a turning point for both his musical style and his visual identity. Compared with the cover, this was the first time listeners heard Elizo’s own words.

After Nunca Más, Elizo Released El Giro, the Third Single From a Debut Album in Progress

So what came next built on that foundation. El Giro followed on 20 February 2026. Elizo wrote it with his uncle, and Herrera Maldonado produced it with Zacarías. The song is about the pain of loving someone who does not love you back.

It is also the third single from a debut album that Elizo is still working on. He describes the record as a concept album about love, loss and finding yourself when you were actually looking for something else.

That description fits the road so far. A cover of a nineties breakup song led to Nunca Más, his own song about leaving, then to El Giro, a song about loving without being loved back. The album will put those chapters side by side, and Nunca Más is where his own songwriting begins.

From the MusicDrops.News curator team: “We placed Nunca Más fifth in our Pop, Alt-Pop, Dance Pop playlist, straight after Benson Boone’s Beautiful Things (Acoustic). It lifts the energy after that quiet moment, a goodbye you can dance to.”
