An American Country Songwriter Returns in His Fifties with a Seventh Single in Nine Months

Exit 89 by Stevenson Scott came out on 2 October 2026, his seventh single this year. He is a country singer-songwriter from Saint Johns, Florida, in the United States, and at 54 his first serious run at a songwriting career is three decades behind him. That gap is the story: a comeback still picking up speed, with a Christmas single due on 12 November and an album planned for January.

Stevenson Scott’s Exit 89 is in our playlist below, the seventh single of his comeback year, and his full run of coverage is on his artist profile. PopHits.Co Music Charts, which verifies independent artists and places their releases across its network of music news titles, brought Exit 89 to MusicDrops.News. Hit play, then read on for the road from his first career to this one.

Before Exit 89, Stevenson Scott Fronted Country Bands, Won a Vocal Award and Wrote Songs Full-Time

The story starts in the back seat of a car, though. Scott was born in Atlanta, and he learned to sing along to the radio on weekend drives to his grandparents’ home in Pearson, Georgia. At 11 his family moved to Michigan, and he picked up a guitar.

By his early college years he was fronting two bands at once. Void Where Prohibited played rock covers with friends. Scott Davis and Kickin’ Country, a Detroit country outfit, played his own songs and opened for national acts. In 1995 the Detroit Music Awards named him Best Country Vocalist and Musician.

A year later he moved to Nashville to write songs full-time. He worked with other writers there, among them Phillip Holland, whom he still writes with today.

Then life took over. Marriage, fatherhood and a move to Florida filled the years that followed, and the music carried on in the background. Now his sons are grown, the industry has changed, and he is releasing music under a name that turns his own around.

Exit 89 Makes Seven Singles in 2026 for Stevenson Scott, One Roughly Every Six Weeks

So far, the comeback has run like clockwork. Pretty Much opened the year on 9 January, then Down Deep followed in February and Walk With an Angel in March. She’s All Mine arrived in April, Swing Sets in Heaven at the end of May and Will You on 3 July.

Then came a longer pause, and Exit 89 on 2 October. It runs four minutes, and it carries the sound Scott has built this year: modern Nashville production around plain, lived-in storytelling. His bio describes songs drawn from faith, family roots and decades of experience, written in a home studio in Florida.

Stevenson Scott, whose real name is Scott Stevenson Davis, wrote Exit 89, and John Kennedy produced it. The stage name is a deliberate inversion of that name, chosen for this new chapter.

The pace matters as much as the songs. Seven singles in nine months is a working songwriter’s rhythm, and it gives listeners a reason to come back every few weeks.

What Comes After Exit 89 for Stevenson Scott Is a Christmas Single and a January Album

So what comes next is already scheduled. It Doesn’t Feel Like Christmas is due on 12 November, and a full album is planned for January 2027.

Chris Stapleton and Kris Kristofferson Show Why a Late Second Chapter Can Work

Two country careers show why that patience can pay. Chris Stapleton also moved to Nashville in 1996. He spent years as a songwriter and as a singer in bands, including the bluegrass group The SteelDrivers. Then his debut solo album, Traveller, topped the Billboard 200 in 2015.

Kris Kristofferson took an even longer road. He worked as a janitor at Columbia Records while he wrote. Songs such as Me and Bobby McGee and Help Me Make It Through the Night became hits for other singers before his own records caught up. Both are reminders that in country music, the songs can outlast the wait.

Stevenson Scott is not chasing either of those careers. Still, Exit 89 shows a songwriter who took the long way round and has found his road again, one release at a time.

From the MusicDrops.News curator team: “We placed Exit 89 fifth in our Country, Americana, Alt-Country playlist, straight after Ella Langley’s Be Her. It holds that spot with plain storytelling, the kind that comes from having lived the songs first.”
